To be clear, I'm not actually using any of these goals myself. They aren't things that I have issues with. However I wanted some examples that might prove to help someone out there.

@Justin - Glad you liked the post! Good luck with your resolutions and hopefuly you're able to stick to them and find some real success in them.

@Mariano - I've had been using the inbox / mail sorting system for about 2 years. It is probably one of the only reasons I'm still sane and able to stay caught up at BLUETUX.

Fortunately, I think things will go well in 2010 with Avelient, and I'm looking forward to having people with a similar mindset around me in the company!

Thanks for the kind words and input all!

Sam,

Your recent series of posts have been excellent. They're a great, quick read with some really valuable advice.

Setting realistic goals is incredibly important, especially when you consider that many New Year's resolutions do fail.

Incidentally, my New Year's resolution will be to follow Randy Pauch's recommendations for email management; keeping an "inbox", an "In process" folder, and a "completed" folder. With Mail's smart folders, I can then set up a series of folders that I can track individual projects on.

Also going to try to keep a clean desk, but haven't quite come up with a plan for that one yet. Putting my mess in a drawer without organizing it first isn't exactly a solution. :)

Nice post Sam.

I'm going to set some realistic goals this year. I've only stuck with my New Years resolution once. So it would be nice to stick with some more through the whole year.

The whole “I am going to only drink 1 Soda Pop per week” is actually a really easy goal to stick with. I know from experience. I went just under 5 years without drinking soda. The first few days were the hardest but it got easier. People just have to remember not to substitute it with something equally bad for you like Energy Drinks, Coffee, etc.

I think I'm going to steal numbers 1 and 3 from your list of suggested goals and add a few more of my own. I'd do number 2 as well but I have no dog. I already leave work every day on time or even a few minutes early.
